Research activity is multidisciplinary (Glacial and Quaternary Geology, Geomorphology, Glaciology) and focuses on paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic evolution of polar and mountain regions (Antarctica, Greenland, Alps, Apennines). He took part in 15 Antarctic expeditions, being in charge of the coordination of scientific activities at Mario Zucchelli St. (Italy), also in collaboration with the US-NSF (2002, 2007) and ANT_NZ (2011-12, 2012-13).\r\n

Editor in Chief of the ISI journal “Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria”. Past President of the Italian Glaciological Committee (2009-14), he coordinates the annual glacier monitoring of the Italian Alps, being the National correspondent of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). Italian delegate in the SCAR – Standing Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information. Since 1993 he co-ordinated research projects of the Italian National Antarctic Program (PNRA), also in the framework of international collaborations and was PI of national and local research projects.\r\n
