September 19-20, 2024 – Rome – “Italian Paleoclimatology symposium”»
In September 2024, the Working Group organized the event “Discussion Days on Paleoclimatology in Italy” with the aim of fostering dialogue and collaboration within the Italian scientific community dedicated to studying past climates and environments. The event provided a platform to present national and international opportunities, infrastructures, and physical and virtual resources available for paleoclimate research.
With the involvement of international experts, discussions focused on key research topics, future priorities, and emerging challenges, strengthening synergies within the CNR and between the CNR and other Italian research institutions. The event, held at the CNR Headquarters in Rome and funded by DSSTTA, gathered around 50 researchers from the CNR, universities, INGV, and OGS, stimulating collaboration and the convergence of common research themes.
June 22-24, 2022 – Pisa – International Workshop C4: “Climate Change and Carbon Cycle”»
In June 2022, in collaboration with the Carbon Cycle Working Group, the international workshop C4: “Climate Change and Carbon Cycle” was held at the CNR Research Area in Pisa. The goal of the workshop was to facilitate exchange and collaboration among scientific communities studying Global Change, the Climate System, and the Carbon Cycle, integrating different temporal, methodological, and disciplinary approaches to explore past and present interactions between climate and the carbon cycle.
The workshop featured three thematic sessions (Processes, Impact, Frontiers) and three interactive labs, welcoming over 70 researchers from 10 different countries, including many Early Career Scientists, whose participation was funded by the PAGES (Past Global Changes) network.
In June 2019, the Working Group, in collaboration with AIQUA (Italian Association for Quaternary Studies), organized the first workshop on the history and dynamics of climate over the past 150,000 years (from the Eemian to the Anthropocene). The event was held at the Congress Center of the CNR Research Area in Bologna and brought together 110 researchers from various Italian universities and research institutions, as well as scientists from the University of Vigo (Spain) and GEOPS (France). Discussions covered key issues related to past climate variations and their quantitative reconstruction, including temperature oscillations in the Mediterranean and polar regions over the last 150,000 years, the history of Alpine glaciers, past drought periods, and recent sea level changes.
