Degree in Physics (1998) and PhD in Physics (2005) at the University of Bologna.

He has been a contract professor at the University of Ferrara (from 2005 to 2009), teaching Climatology for the master degree in Physics, and at the University of Bologna (from 2009 to 2021) where he taught Climatology for the Bachelor degree in Atmospheric Physics and Meteorology and for the master degree in Physics of the Earth System.

The research activity focuses mainly on the reconstruction and the study of climate variability and change over Italy, the Alpine region and the Mediterranean basin for the past 250 years, through the rescue and analysis of long instrumental time series of meteorological variables and recently, also through the analysis of proxy data to investigate a much longer time horizon, up to several millennia into the past.

He authored or co-authored over 100 scientific papers published in ISI international journals. He has worked as a reviewer for the Research Council for Earth and Life Sciences in the Netherlands, the National Science Foundation (US), the MIUR, the Estonian Research Council, the EEA (European Economic Area) and Norway Grants, the Swiss National Science Foundation and as a reviewer for a few dozen scientific journals.
